Integrated Gas Recovery Services Inc. ( IGRS ) is a partnership between Comcor Environmental Limited ( Comcor ) and Walker Environmental Group. Comcor is a recognized leader in landfill gas recovery, control and utilization. WEG provides waste management, project management and construction expertise.
IGRS's strengths lie in its ability to provide complete design, finance, build, own and operate landfill gas solutions to its clients. Additionally, IGRS is unique among its competitors in that it provides all services completely in-house. Furthermore, IGRS, as a result of its wide range of experience and the member partners own philosophy, takes a practical hands-on approach to problem solving, providing the client with the greatest value. IGRS landfill gas utilization projects include both direct use and electricity generation projects. In addition, IGRS has been successful in the sale of emission reduction credits related to the destruction of methane through landfill gas utilization. |
IGRS reviews the operating history of the landfill. Lifespan, receiving history, and size of the landfill all affect the level of landfill gas produced in the landfill. If review of these factors indicates that there is the potential for a landfill gas utilization project, IGRS will proceed with landfill gas testing at the site. [Close this section]
IGRS mobilizes a temporary landfill gas flaring system at the landfill site to assess the quantity and quality of landfill gas produced at the landfill. This system will draw landfill gas through a temporary collection system and has a necessary MOE mobile Certificate of Approval to operate the temporary system throughout Ontario. Upon completion of the testing period, IGRS removes the temporary collection system, reinstates the landfill to its original condition, and provides results on the quantity and quality of landfill gas. IGRS pursues approvals from public agencies related to collection, flaring, and utilization of landfill gas. Potential agencies include; Ministry of Environment, Niagara Escarpment Commission and Ministry of Natural Resources. IGRS has extensive experience in submitting applications, responding to agency concerns, and ultimately acquiring approvals. Our established relationships with public agencies allow us to effectively manage the approval process. [Close this section]
IGRS investigates all potential utilization projects in the vicinity of the landfill site. Possible utilization projects include direct use at a neighbouring facility or at the landfill, or generation of electricity for sale. IGRS undertakes all aspects of the utilization project, including design and construction, financing, negotiation of purchase agreement and operation of the landfill gas utilization system for the life of the project. The development of a landfill gas utilization project may include a royalty payment to the owner of the landfill. [Close this section]
For some landfills, landfill gas utilization remains unfeasible due to small size, remoteness, or age of the landfill. However, an owner may still desire a landfill gas collection system due to odour or safety issues. IGRS designs and constructs landfill gas collection systems that will effectively address these issues at the minimum possible cost. [Close this section]

IGRS operations and monitoring services include remote SCADA control of the system, regular visits to the site, monitoring of gas levels through the collection system, and scheduled maintenance of the entire system. [Close this section]
Regardless of the type of utilization, most projects will require a long-term agreement for the purchase of the power. This commitment to purchase the power is necessary to justify the capital investment in the system.
The negotiation of long-term power purchase agreements can be complex and lengthy. By assessing the risk profiles of the purchaser and the project, IGRS has successfully negotiated several agreements with both public and private sector clients. [Close this section]
Although emission reduction credit (ERC) trading systems have not yet been developed by the governments of Canada and the United States, many companies have participated in emissions trading as part of their risk mitigation program.
IGRS has direct experience negotiating and implementing emission reduction credit agreements, including documentation of credit verification. Most emission reduction credit agreements require a long term commitment to provide credits. IGRS , with our multiple projects, is able to make long-term commitments on credits. In the event that a project is not able to meet the credit target, IGRS can substitute credits from another qualified project; a risk mitigation strategy that is not available to participants with limited emission reduction projects.
IGRS is able to assist in qualifying and reporting landfill gas emission reduction credits (where applicable) and through its network of ERC contacts and brokers, is able to secure interested parties for the purchase of ERC's.

IGRS is keenly aware of the challenges facing municipalities today. We pride ourselves on finding creative and innovative solutions to these various challenges. Utilization of landfill gas provides an environmental benefit through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, addresses odour and safety issues at the site, and provides a potential source of revenue to the owner. Utilization options range from generating electricity to direct use in a boiler system to providing heat and carbon dioxide requirements for a greenhouse.
